Under Dick Advocaat, Feyenoord endured an inconsistent 2020-21 season, racing out of the blocks before a sluggish second half of the campaign limited them to just a handful of wins after the turn of the year. The Rotterdam club ultimately finished fifth in the Eredivisie, short of the automatic European places they had targeted.

A place in the Conference League was not given up easily. Feyenoord had to fight through the end-of-season play-offs, beating Sparta Rotterdam and then Utrecht, both by 2-0 scorelines, to secure continental football for the following campaign and salvage some reward from an otherwise mixed season.
