Wayne Rooney's final season with DC United, in 2019, was the high point of his MLS career. Wearing the captain's armband, he scored a hat-trick in a 5-0 demolition of Real Salt Lake in March, and later that year notched the 300th club goal of his career in a tight defeat to Houston Dynamo, underlining the influence he carried for the Black-and-Red all season long.

Rooney finished the 2019 regular season with 11 goals and 8 assists across 28 appearances, driving DC United into the playoffs, where their run ended with a first-round defeat to Toronto FC. It marked the end of his time in Washington before a return to England that winter.
